About ITU-AJ

From the President

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was inaugurated in 1932 with the merger of the International Telegraph Union, which had been founded in 1865 as the world's first international organization, with the International Radiotelegraph Union, which had been established in 1906, having as its mission 'facilitating peaceful relations, international cooperation among peoples and economic and social development by means of efficient telecommunication services,' and later became one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations. Since its inauguration the ITU has been keeping up with and supporting all the technological innovation and market changes in the information and communications field and has actively undertaken efforts in a timely manner. In recent years the environment surrounding the ITU has greatly changed with the diffusion and advancement of digital technology.

In Japan, which is pushing ahead with advanced endeavors in this field, society is changing from a society centered on the telephone to a ubiquitous society based on the Internet and mobile phones, and, in addition, networks and services are further progressing so that the communication infrastracture is moving steadily towards a more sophisticated society. Information Communication Technology (ICT) has become an indispensable means for the counter-measures against global warming that has become a global concern, as well as for the economic and social development of every country in the world, where the contributions by Japan, which has developed cutting edge technologies, are much awaited for.

The ITU Association of Japan was established September 1 1971 and has been supporting the ITU and APT(Asia-Pacific Telecommunity) symposia, seminars, and meetings hosted by Japan as the local secretariat, and also supporting the job of relevant Japanese organizations in the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, World Radiocommunication Conferences, Radiocommunication Assemblies, World Telecommunication Standardization Assemblies, and the World Telecommunication Development Conference etc. with the aim of promoting harmony and progress between Japan and the countries of the world in the fields of telecommunications and broadcasting.

I think that we must positively continue not only our fundamental role of supporting the activities of the ITUfs Radiocommunication, Standardization and Telecommunication Development Sectors, but we should also engage in further technical and international cooperation with other related international bodies. While strengthening the cooperation between government, private industry and academic bodies in Japan and through cooperation with our supporting members and related parties and through the sharing of information, I would also like to endeavor to raise Japanfs presence in the world.

I hope that everyone will understand and continue to offer their support and encouragement for our associationfs activities.
